BACKWOODS NEWS:

Lionsgate Picks Up 'Backwoods'

December 12, 2006 -- Variety reports today that Lionsgate has picked up "Backwoods" from Spain's Filmax. Here's what they had to say: "Renewing a long-standing relationship with Spain's top horror pic producer, Julio Fernandez's Filmax Ent., Lionsgate has picked up North American rights to Gary Oldman-starrer 'The Backwoods.'

"The feature debut of Spanish helmer Koldo Serra, the English-language thriller is set in the Basque Country in 1978. On vacation there, two young couples stumble on a deformed girl in a cabin and, in a tale of mounting violence, ire local villagers when they try to help her.

"'Backwoods' co-stars Virginie Ledoyen, Paddy Considine, Aitana Sanchez-Gijon and Lluis Homar. It is co-produced by up-and-coming Spanish producer Monfort Producciones, Castelao Productions, Filmax's feature film production arm, Divine Productions, Holy Cow Films and Videntia Frames Producciones.

"In its drive to become a specialist in horror fare, Lionsgate has bought U.S. rights to more than a dozen films from Filmax in a relationship that dates back to 2000 when Lionsgate closed Stateside distribution on a four pic package of 'Arachnid,' 'Dagon,' Faust' and 'Beyond Re-Animator.'"
