COFFIN JOE NEWS:

January 29, 2007 -- Photos have finally emerged from the new horror movie by the Brazilian master. Ray Castile, who has a role in the upcoming 'Coffin Joe' film, sent us a link to these stills. Click here for 'em. "The shoot ended Dec. 20," he tells eSplatter. "The movie is going to be more violent and more urban than previous Coffin Joe films, but it will still have the hallucinatory quality and bent ideology you come to expect in a Coffin Joe movie. I am playing Coffin Joe in one scene, a flashback that shows how he escaped the swamp at the end of This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse. How I got involved is a long story, one that I detail on the web site. Take a look!"

Variety on 'Coffin Joe'

December 18, 2006 -- Variety has reported on the new movie from Brazil's legendary "Coffin Joe." The director of the amazing "Strange World of Coffin Joe" is back with his first movie in nearly three decades. Here's what Variety reported:

"It has been 28 years since the master of Brazil's terror pics, helmer Jose Mojica Marins, made the last feature starring himself as Ze do Caixao (Coffin Joe). But the remarkable image of the devilish, extravagantly finger-nailed Coffin Joe is still alive in the imagination of millions of Brazilians.

"Coffin Joe is now back in 'Encarnacao do demonio' (Devil's Reincarnation), lensing in Sao Paulo till Dec. 21. The Olhos de Cao production is due to open in the second half of next year.

"'Reincarnation' is the sequel to Coffin Joe features 'At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul' and 'This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse,' made in the 1960s.

"The helmer directed a series of other pics starring Coffin Joe up to 1978, but he never managed to make 'Reincarnation.' Mojica says three producers committed to making 'Reincarnation,' but died before accomplishing the project.

"The local press talks of a Coffin Joe curse, further stimulated by the Nov. 27 death of natural causes during 'Reincarnation's' lensing of Jesse Valadao, who played an important role in the pic.

"But the true curse of Mojica is the prejudice against his work. In Brazil's highly subsidized film production sector, he directed 29 features, including some B.O. hits, and dozens of shorter pics without using a single penny of Brazilian taxpayers. His work was seen as trashy and unworthy of public funding.

"In the 1980s and 1990s, Mojica dedicated himself to other projects. He made videos, wrote short stories and comicbooks, performed in several pics and one telenovela, presented TV terror shows, hosted terror circus shows in a local carnival, and even directed porn pics.

"The perception of the helmer's work started to change sometime in the 1990s.

"Local critics recognized the originality of Mojica's terror pics. Andre Barcinski and Ivan Finotti directed doc 'Coffin Joe: The Strange World of Jose Mojica Marins' that received a special jury mention in the 2001 Sundance Fest.

"This year, Brazil's Ministry of Culture granted $460,000 to the production of 'Reincarnation.' Producers raised the remaining coin through the country's tax shelter system.

"'I have never worked with so many people. In the old days, my team totaled not more than 15 people and each had to do different jobs. Now I have a crew of 70 highly specialized workers,' Mojica says.

"In 'Reincarnation,' Coffin Joe continues his obsessive search, initiated in the trilogy's first two pics, for the perfect woman who will give birth to his perfect son.

"What is left to be seen is whether Coffin Joe will also find his public in the 21st century or will be relegated to the fringes."

Brazilian Horror Legend 'Coffin Joe' to Start Filming New Movie in November

September 26, 2006 -- Brazil's Coffin Joe is at work on a new movie after nearly three decades of hibernation. Coffin Joe is one of the great foreign horror filmmakers. For instance, his "Strange World of Coffin Joe" is one of the best explicit horror films of the 1960s and arguably one of the best anthology horror films ever made. Fangoria reported today on that the new movie from Coffin Joe (whose real name is José Mojica Marins) is officially in preproduction: "Fangoria got the scoop that Marins’ new film ENCARNAÇÃO DO DEMÔNIO (EMBODIMENT OF EVIL) is now officially in preproduction. The project, which marks Marins’ return to the horror genre as a director after almost three decades, has come together at last after years of rumors and disappointments. 'We’ll shoot in the City of São Paulo, with principal photography starting November 2, going all the way through December 17,' producer Dennison Ramalho tells Fango. ...

"'The original script has been around since 1968, and was meant to have a young and athletic Zé do Caixão terrorizing the countryside, just like in the earlier Coffin Joe films. I revamped it, placing the story in the big city and having an old Coffin Joe leaving prison after 40 years. He’s old, yes, but still adamant on his goal of finding a woman to bear his son and continue his vicious bloodline. Only now he has made many enemies—natural and supernatural—who want to prevent him from accomplishing his mission. Among them are a brutal police colonel, the inhabitants of a local slum and, especially, the victims from his past films, who ascend from hell lusting for revenge!'"
