Del Toro's New TV Series

October 2, 2006 -- "Pan's Labyrinth" director Guillermo del Toro talked to SCI FI Wire about a proposed television series, called The Strain. "It's horror. It would be a really nasty, nasty fantasy. ... My deal is with Fox, and we're in the process of developing the story and seeing if we see eye to eye. ... I already wrote the bible and the character arcs for each character and so forth, so I'm doing all the documents on it. He would not talk much about the subject of the series. "It's too early on, the very early stages of that." His new movie "Pan's Labyrinth" will open in limited release on Dec. 29 before going wide in January 2007, and has been nominated by Mexico to compete for the Best Foreign Oscar.

'Pan's Labyrinth' to Compete for an Oscar

September 27, 2006 -- For the first time in a long time, a horror movie is up for an Oscar. Mexico has selected "Pan's Labyrinth" to compete in the Best Foreign Film category at the 2006 Oscars. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, the Spanish-language "Labyrinth" has been warmly received at every film festival it has been presented at. Here's what Variety reported today:

"Guillermo del Toro's fantasy horror pic 'Pan's Labyrinth' will represent Mexico in this year's foreign-language film Oscar race.

"Picturehouse, which picked up North American rights at Sundance for close to $6 million, will release the Spanish-language drama Dec. 29 in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago before expanding to 35 other markets on Jan. 12.

"'We'll be vying for other categories as well, including best director, set design, art direction, score and actress for Ivana Baquero,' said Picturehouse prexy Bob Berney.

"Baquero plays the little girl whose fantasy world allows her to cope with the harsh realities of post-civil war Spain.

"Del Toro, who also wrote the screenplay, based the pic's fantasy characters and sets on his own sketches.

"Producers of the Mexican-Spanish co-production include Mexican helmer Alfonso Cuaron, Tequila Gang's Bertha Navarro, Frida Torresblanco of Esperanto Filmoj and Alvaro Augustin of Spain's Estudios Picasso.

"Film premiered at Cannes, where it competed for the Palme d'Or and received a 22-minute standing ovation. It closes the 44th New York Film Festival on Oct. 15 and is slated for the Sitges Fantasy Film Festival in Spain and Morelia fest in Mexico. It opens Oct. 10 in Spain."
