January 2009 DVD and Blu-Ray Preview

Now that we're past the holidays, horror films are finally getting released to DVD again on a pretty regular basis. The New Year is getting off to a lively start with "Eden Lake," an excellent horror movie from the producers of "The Descent" -- review here -- and "Alphabet Killer," the new horror movie from the director of "Wrong Turn". Also out this Tuesday is "Midnight Movie," a great little horror movie -- review here.

"The Wicker Man" is getting released on DVD again from Lionsgate on January 6. That would be the 1973 version with Christopher Lee -- not the bad remake with Nicolas Cage. This is also apparently the shortened 88-minute cut of the film.

Next week, January 13, we're getting the much-hyped "Tokyo Gore Police," Alex Aja's mixed bag of a horror movie "Mirrors" -- review here -- and an uncut version of "My Bloody Valentine" -- the original.

Fulci's 'Cat in the Brain' Gets a DVD Release

Currently, the Italian horror maestro’s rare classic is an out-of-print DVD item that fetches close to $200. Well, don't plunk out that amount on eBay. It's making a new North American DVD premiere March 31

The late, great Lucio Fulci is revered by horror movie fans around the world as the Italian “Godfather of Gore” for directing such films as "Zombie" and "The Beyond".

"Cat in the Brain" is Fulci’s ultimate statement about his own work, a masterpiece of cinematic dementia that echoes Hitchcock’s "Psycho.", William Castle’s "Strait Jacket", David Lynch’s "Eraserhead" and Fellini’s 8 1/2.

"Cat in the Brain" stars Fulci as himself in the twisted tale of a horror film director driven insane by his own creations. Tormented by visions of bizarre violence, murder and mayhem, Fulci seeks help from a sinister psychiatrist who draws him into a vortex of madness and death….like a cat, stalking the darkest corridors of the director’s mind and clawing his sanity to bloody shreds.

Since its original release in 1990, "Cat in the Brain" has become a sought-after gem for Fulci fanatics, difficult to find and banned in the UK for its extreme graphic violence. The movie has won acclaim from modern masters of the macabre including Clive Barker and Eli Roth.

Grindhouse Releasing’s deluxe edition of "Cat in the Brain" boasts a high-definition, widescreen anamorphic transfer of Fulci’s uncensored director’s cut, along with an amazing collection of bonus features.

'Halloween' Sequel Hits Screens in August

Like its predecessor, Rob Zombie's "H2" is set to hit screens in August -- August 28, 2009.

No one but Tyler Mane -- as Michael Myers -- has officially been accounced in the cast. The film will apparently be set moments after the events of the 2007 remake. It's main competition will be the Screen Gems comedy "Max's Mardi Gras," not exactly the same audience base.

Teaser Trailer for 'Subhysteria'

Sixteen people get stuck in a subway car in NYC for 36 hours, without communication, food, way to escape, and a fatal sensation that they are going to die. A raw display of human behavior when one confronts the possibility of death.

Directed by Venezuela's Leonard Zelig, "Subhysteria" is a drama-thriller that looks like it may qualify as a horror movie. Watch for it at a film festival near you.

Viral Video to Promote 'The Unborn'

David S. Goyer's new horror movie "The Unborn" is hitting theaters January 9, and the promo folks have already cooked up a nifty viral video to go along with it.

Pretty hilarious.

The official Web site can be found here. And here's the synopsis:

Sometimes the soul of a dead person has been so tainted with evil that it is denied entrance to heaven. It must endlessly wander the borderlands between worlds, desperately searching for a new body to inhabit.
And sometimes it actually succeeds.

Writer/director David Goyer (Blade: Trinity, The Invisible, Batman Begins) gives a terrifying glimpse into the life of the undead in The Unborn, a supernatural thriller that follows a young woman pulled into a world of nightmares when a demonic spirit haunts her and threatens everyone she loves.

Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman) hated her mother for leaving her as a child.

Vote for the Best Horror Movies of 2008

2008 was a pretty interesting year for horror films. There were a lot of good horror movies made in '08. But I'd argue the best films didn't come from the U.S., but rather France and Sweden. I think easily the best film of the year was "Let the Right One In," which only saw a limited release stateside.

The best U.S. production may have been the barely released "Baby Blues", a film that blows away anyone with the guts to watch it and is guaranteed to become a cult classic.

'Chemical Wedding' Is Now 'Crowley'

Bruce Dickinson's "The Chemical Wedding" is one of the best heavy metal albums of all time. The film he wrote that was somewhat based upon it, however, is changing its name from "The Chemical Wedding" to the more commercial "Crowley" for its U.S. release.

Hitting DVD March 10 courtesy of Anchor Bay, the newly titled "Crowley" is going to marketed as a film about the legendary occult figure at the center of the film's storyline, Aleister Crowley. In the movie, written by Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson and directed by Julian Doyle, Simon Callow plays a professor who becomes the reincarnation of occultist Aleister Crowley.

'My Bloody Valentine' to Be 2D on Most Screens

This is bummer news for anyone not in a big city with an awesome cineplex. Unfortunately, "My Bloody Valentine 3D" will be playing in 2D on most screens.

The New York Times reports today:

Like all studios experimenting with 3-D, Lionsgate is struggling with a shortage of theaters equipped to project the work. By the release date for “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” Lionsgate will have only 900 3-D screens available, so it will show a 2-D version of the movie on about 1,600 screens.

A neat story about the 3D trend which is gaining steam in horror, though.. . .

Good News -- The 'Rosemary's Baby' Remake Is Stillborn

There are simply some movies that must not be remade. Roman Polanski's "Rosemary's Baby" was slated for a redo from Platinum Dunes. Collider interviewed Dunes producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form who said the project has been aborted.

"We went down that road and we even talked to the best writers in town and it feels like it might not be do-able. We couldn’t’ come up with something where it felt like it was relevant and we could add something to it other than what it was so we’re now not going to be doing that film."

Meanwhile, they are still making remakes to "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "The Birds." . .

Well, here's at least one remake that promises to be better than the original.

In "My Bloody Valentine 3-D," being directed by Patrick Lussier, Jaime King stars as Sarah Palmer, a woman who has married her teenage sweetheart's nemesis, and the pair have a child together. "When she and her first love are reunited, it becomes clear that she still carries a torch for the man." Watch for it in 3D on Jan. 16 -- right around the corner.. . .

Platinum Dunes' Huge Production Slate - 'Nightmare on Elm Street', 'F13 Part 2' and Satanic Cults

Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes is set to begin filming the "Nightmare on Elm Street" movie beginning this Spring. The film is going to be produced by Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form. Meanwhile, their "Near Dark" remake is dead -- thanks to the success of "Twilight."

With the "Friday the 13th" remake set to hit screens from the same team in February -- and a sequel to that already in the works -- the early 2000s are starting to look more like the 1980s every day. Hopefully "Nightmare" will be more of a sequel/prequel type project -- not a remake.

But in addition to F13-2 and "Nightmare", Platinum Dunes does have one original film on production slate.

Scotty Kosar, who penned Dunes' "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" remake is writing an untitled supernatural thriller about satanic cults for the company. Dunes' Brad Fuller to Sci-Fi Wire the film is about "a college girl whose brother dies, and she goes to investigate his death and finds he was into some pretty freaky stuff.

Trailer for 'Red Sands'

Here's an interesting new horror flick. In 2009, director Alex Turner returns to the genre with "Red Sands," written by Simon Barrett. This duo previously brought us the Lovecraftian Civil War tale Dead Birds. In their latest effort Brendan Miller, Shane West, Aldis Hodge, Theo Rossi and Noel Gugliemi are soldiers serving in the Middle East. When they destroy a statue, they're visited by a malevolent force.

Negatives Discovered for 'Devil's Express'

Code Red DVD has announced that it has discovered the negatives for legendary horror-blaxploitation-gangploitation film "The Devil's Express".

After four long years of searching, we were convinced we would never find it, but we have just located the original negatives of the blaxploitation, kung fu, gangploitation, subway monster hybrid DEVIL'S EXPRESS! The lab just inspected them and they have confirmed that indeed these are the original negatives, along with the trailer elements. We are getting ready to do a HiDef master and will be working on the extras soon. Hopefully we can have this out in September 2009!

In this long lost 1976 film, Warhawk Tanzania plays an urban afro American, who hate the gang warfare all around him. In desperation, Tanzania summons a demon from the subway system to purge his neighborhood of punks. Unfortunately, the demons are uncontrollable, resulting in the deaths of several innocent people.

'Final Destination 4' Now Called 'Final Destination - Death Trip 3D' - Check Out Photos

It's a pretty good title change. With 2009 turning into the comeback year of 3D horror, it was necessary to get "3D" in the title -- and "Final Destination 4 in 3D" just doesn't have much of a ring to it. Directed by David Ellis, this fourth film in the franchise hits cinemeas in the third dimension August 21.

Here is the official synopsis:

On what should have been a fun-filled day at the races, Nick O'Bannon has a horrific premonition in which a bizarre sequence of events causes multiple race cars to crash, sending flaming debris into the stands, brutally killing his friends and causing the upper deck of the stands to collapse on him. When he comes out of this grisly nightmare Nick panics, persuading his girlfriend, Lori, and their friends, Janet and Hunt, to leave...escaping seconds before Nick's frightening vision becomes a terrible reality. Thinking they've cheated death, the group has a new lease on life, but unfortunately for Nick and Lori, it is only the beginning.

Photos from the 'Stepfather' Remake

Yep. It sure feels like every horror movie in production these days is a remake. Pretty much every decent horror movie from the eighties is getting a redux right now. Included in that pile is "The Stepfather" from 1987.

Here are two new stills from that remake.

Dylan Walsh of "Nip/Tuck" and Sela Ward of "The Fugitive" serve the lead roles in the "Stepfather" remake, while Penn Badgley plays a teenage boy who suspects his new stepfather-to-be is a psycho.

The Unborn exclusive clip

Forrest J. Ackerman RIP

Forrest J. Ackerman, the legendary editor/writer of Famous Monsters of Filmland and collector has passed away. He was 92.

The AP reports today:

Ackerman died Thursday of heart failure at his Los Angeles home, said Kevin Burns, head of Prometheus Entertainment and a trustee of Ackerman's estate.

Ackerman has been credited with coining the phrase "science fiction." He had a huge impact on horror fans as the man behind Famouns Monsters of Filmland, the horror mag that predated Fangoria, but stopped publishing in 1983.

I can remember seeing the first photos of films such as "Friday the 13th" and "Alien" in this magazine as a teenager. It published from 1958-1983. Its heyday was the 1960s.

Forrest will be sorely missed.

Hillary Swank Does Hammer Horror

The film is entitled "The Resident," and it's about a woman stalked by her psycho landlord. It's also going to be filmed in America apparently. Antti J. Jokinen is directing his own script, co-written with Robert Orr and revised by Erin Cressida.

Not sure how big this is for fans of Hammer Horror, as this film is being shot in the U.S. When I first heard the news, I had images of Swank playing a British aristocrat from the 1700s battling vampires or something -- but that cleary ins't happening.

Latest eighties horror film set for a remake is John Carpenter's "The Live."

John Carpenter's cult 1988 film is getting the remake treatment from Universal and studio-based Strike Entertainment, which are in negotiations to acquire the film rights with rights holder Les Mougins.

Strike's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman will produce, while Shep Gordon of Les Mougins and Carpenter will serve as executive producers.

Rob Zombie Will Reportedly Film 'Halloween 2'

Word is out that the helmers of "Inside" are off the "Halloween II" sequel to Rob Zombie's "Halloween". So then who would direct? Why not Rob Zombie himself?

Now it looks like Rob Zombie is directing "Halloween 2." STYD first reported the rumor and reps from Rob Zombie are not denying it. Apparently, a press release is due in a day or two.

Given just how terrible Zombie's "Halloween" remake was, this shouldn't come as good news. But it is somewhat predictable, because his film was a huge commercial success. It also means his much anticipated "Tyrannosaurus Rex" is going to be put on hold.

'Twilight' Success May Mean New 'Buffy' Movie

A script by Joss Whedon has apparently already been completed for a "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" movie, presumably to star Sarah Michelle Gellar. The film likely never would have been made -- but with "Twilight" raking in kazillions at the box office, studio chiefs are likely to greenlight it.

Reports the Herald-Sun Newspaper in Australia:

The monster success of girly vampire pic Twilight at the US Box office last weekend could kick open the door for a big-screen return of Joss Whedon’s much-loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit. The Buffy concept was first unveiled as a movie in 1992 with long-forgotten Kristy Swanson in the title role.

Before it became a hit TV series, "Buffy" was the subject of a theatrical movie in 1992. The show easily outshone the movie..

In addition, a Red Carpet, invitation-only premiere will take place at the Cinema Village on Thursday, December 11th with special guest appearances TBA.

'Deep Red' Gets Ultimate Edition Treatment

For enthusiasts of Dario Argento, this is great news. The arguably superior shortened, English-language cut of "Profondo Rosso" (aka "Deep Red") is finally being released on DVD in Anamorphic widescreen -- but it's in Denmark!

Oh well. Nothing a little EBay can't fix. Actually, this upcoming DVD release of the film from Another World Entertainment is an 'ultimate edition', featuring both the extended Italian version and the shorter (some might argue tighter) English language version.

Disc 1 will feature the 126-minute Italian director's cut. In a slight bummer, commentary won't be from Argento himself but by a Danish Argento expert: Thomas Rostock.

Disc 2 will feature the short 105 minute "international version" of the film.

Upcoming Sci-Fi-Horror Film 'Plaguers'

There's not enough sci-fi horror being produced these days. So it's good to see one title is around the corner: "Plaguers." Here's some official poster art for this fear film about a band of "sexy space pirates."

Here's official synopsis:

When a band of sexy space pirates hijack a fuel-transport vessel bound for Earth, an alien virus known only as "Thanatos" is accidentally released. The contagion mutates its victims, transforming them one after another into ravenous, demonic creatures. Pirates and crew must join together to destroy the undead PLAGUERS as the ship nears Earth, threatening to infect the entire planet.

"Plaguers" was directed by Brad Sykes, who has been helming direct-to-video horror movies since the late 1990s, beginning with "Camp Blood."

Cover Art, Details on Uncut 'My Bloody Valentine' DVD

It's been the stuff of legend. The pretty bad 1980s slasher "My Bloody Valentine" was badly truncated for its theatrical release, with a lot of the gore scenes that turned up in magazines like Fangoria totally cut out of the released film. An uncut version never saw the light of day. Click here for our brief review of the original.

This January, at long last, the uncut version of "My Bloody Valentine" looks set to be unleashed to the world. It should be fun to see, although the movie was simply so weak that it's hard to imagine that the addition of some gore is really going to improve things all that much.

January 13 is the date the moldie oldie hits the streets courtesy of Lionsgate, in time for the January 16 release of Patrick Lussier's "My Bloody Valentine 3-D" in theaters.

PG-13 Horror Dominates

As reported in today's New York Times:

'Twilight' took a giant bite out of the North American box office over the weekend, selling an estimated $70.6 million in tickets and proving that a wholesome love story can still turn out a huge young-adult audience.

David Goyer, writer of the "Blade" franchise and the new "Batman" films, is helming a new movie, "The Unborn." Hopefully it will be better than "Blade Trinity," which he also directed.

'Hex' Project Hexed

Variety is reporting that the "Jonah Hex" DC Comics horror adaptation is running into some problems. Josh Brolin was set to star as the title character.

Today's Variety reports:

Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have dropped out as the directors of "Jonah Hex," the DC Comics property that is expected to headline "W." and "Milk" star Josh Brolin as a partly disfigured gunslinger and bounty hunter.

Neveldine and Taylor wrote the script, but their exit as directors was attributed to "creative differences." The studio is moving quickly to set a new director, determined to keep Brolin in the fold for a spring start.

Doesn't sound good for the "Hex" movie, does it? Apparently Warner Bros. is still determined to go forward without the two guys who were driving the project. Both of them were behind that action movie "Crank" too.

I definitely remember this comic from the 1970s and it certainly would make an interesting film.

Exclusive Interview with the Co-Director of 'Zombie Diaries'

Striking DVD next Tuesday from Dimension Extreme, "The Zombie Diaries" is the second mockumentary about a zombie apocalypse to hit DVD this year -- the first being George Romero's "Land of the Dead." Part of a new wave of mockumentary horror, the film has been well received by some critics and you can expect to see eSplatter's own review later this week.

We were lucky enough to catch up with one of the film's co-directors, Michael Bartlett, to discuss the making of the UK's first and so far only zombie-apocalypse mockumentary film, which is enjoying a global release.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA FOR 'ZOMBIE DIARIES'?

I saw a film called 'Ever Since The World Ended', which was a post-apocalyptic documentary showing the world after it has been devastated by an unknown virus.

I liked the premise but wanted to see more of the apocalyptic world; I wanted to see empty streets and ghost towns; I wanted to see the sheer savagery that would be caught on camera in a lawless society. Kevin and I have always been very big horror fans, and we decided to move forwards with a film that essentially mixed the Blair Witch Cinema Verite style documenting the post-apocalyptic world, with the classic zombie movie. The reason for this is that we are both big fans of Romero's films, and zombie movies were making a resurgence in the market-place. As much as you love an idea, it is important to ensure it has some sort of a shot commercially, especially if you want to continue to work in the movie business.

HAD YOU CONSIDERED MAKING IT A STANDARD NARRATIVE FILM INSTEAD OF A MOCKUMENTARY?

No. The hook was 'Blair Witch meets Night of the Living Dead' - totally original at the time, so that is exactly what we wanted to do.

James Bond Filmmaker to Helm Big-Budget Zombie Film

Well, zombie films have finally become totally mainstream. The director of "Quantum of Solace" is set to direct "World War Z."

As reported in Variety:

Paramount has set "Quantum of Solace" director Marc Forster to helm "World War Z," based on the Max Brooks bestselling novel about a worldwide infestation of flesh-eating zombies.

"Changeling" scribe J. Michael Straczynski is writing the screenplay, and Brad Pitt's Plan B is producing.

Brooks -- the son of Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft -- wrote a detailed tale in which a researcher for the U.N. Postwar Commission interviews survivors from countries all over the world, 10 years after the crisis, to gather a first-person post-mortem on a war that obliterated every country on the map.

Well, zombie films have become such a dime a dozen these days that maybe it is time for the subgenre to take a little break for a while. When the makers of the latest James Bond and Clint Eastwood films start making them ...

A Ton of Images From 'The Children'

Undeniably one of the most hotly anticipated horror movies of 2009 is "The Children" from the director of "The Killing Gene." The buzz on the street is that it's a great movie. About 10 new photos have just sprung up from the British film, which is being pitched at AFM.

Tom Shankland, the director of the "Killing Gene" (aka "Waz"), is back with a new horror film apparently about evil kids! Check out the official site here.

The film, which stars Jeremy Sheffield, Rachel Shelley, Stephen Campbell, Eva Birthistle, Hannah Tointon, and Eva Sayer, sounds more than a little like "Island of the Damned." During a relaxing Christmas vacation, parents have to fight for survival as the children begin to turn on them. Ugh, don't you hate it when that happens? No release date is set for this UK film, which is clearly one to look forward to.
