Two interviews have appeared with Richard Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino regarding
"Grind House," the new horror film the two directed, featuring one-hour segments
by each, to be releaed April 7, 2007. Here's what MTV had to report:
Speaking about the trailers, Rodriguez added: "I can't say anything about it because those are really surprises. Danny Trejo ['Con Air'] is in one, but there's another one that's huge. People are going to wish that one was the movie." Finally, Rodriguez dropped the bombshell that there is already talk of a "Grind House" sequel, which would bring the fake ads from the first flick to fruition. "If those trailers are great enough," he revealed, "they might be part of the feature we do for the next 'Grind House.'"
Meanwhile, Entertainment Weekly published this nugget:
Tell me about each of your Grind House films...
TARANTINO Our original idea was to do a horror double feature. The genre I wanted to tackle was slasher films, because I'm a big fan of late-'70s, early-'80s slasher films. The only thing was, what makes them so good is the genre is so rigid. And I had an idea about a guy who kills girls with his car as opposed to a machete, and I put it in a slasher-film structure. Other than the big car moments, though, my thing could be a Eugene O'Neill play. These girls just talk and talk and talk. If it wasn't for the car stuff, I could do my thing on stage.
So it's like Christine meets Long Day's Journey Into Night...
TARANTINO Yeah, but with more slasher elements! [Laughs] It's called Death Proof. I'm casting right now; more than likely the killer will be Mickey Rourke.
Robert, tell me about your film.
RODRIGUEZ Mine's a zombie movie called Planet Terror. It feels like a John Carpenter movie that took place between Escape From New York and The Thing. I wanted to do a zombie script a while back because there hadn't been any good zombie movies in a while. I got about 30 pages into it, and then all these zombie movies came out. So I thought, Well, I don't have to make them zombies — there could be other reasons why they're like this. They're infected people. Quentin, what's that story?
TARANTINO There was this Umberto Lenzi zombie movie in the '70s called Nightmare City, and a while ago some friends of mine were going to meet him in Rome, and I told them to tell him how much I loved Nightmare City. And they told him. And he goes, ''Zombies? What's theees zombies? They're infected people!''

MTV.com is reporting that the sequel to
"Hostel" will be hitting screens in Jaunary 2007.
The film picks up from the moment the first film ended,
and continues following the character Jay Hernandez
played as he obviously goes about confronting the Hostel
folks again.
The film has three new protagonists: Girls studying
in Europe. "They're studying in Italy for
the summer and they get lured, and they go back to ...
well, we're gong to go back to a lot of familiar places."
Of course, the same evil Slovakian organization is at work
in Part 2: "They've got the whole thing set up
all over the place, and they have different scouts. We're going to learn
a lot more about how it all works. In Hostel 2 you're really going
to see the ins and outs of the whole organization and hwo they get people
and kill them. ...
"Quentin [Tarantino] was really helpful when I told him teh story idea. I was like, 'What do you
think about this?' and he was like, 'Oh man, what if we did it with girls?'
We started to talk about some differenet death scenes, and anytime I'd say,
'Oh, what if we killed someone like this?' he had three other
different ways to kill them. When he reads the script, it inspires a
bunch of things. ... There will be plenty of blood and torture.
I can tell you that." ...

straight to DVD, can be seen right

Variety reported that New Line has purchased the rights to

as ferocious as it was in Japan.

Huge News Update:
FangoCon Coverage, Plus New Remakes, AvP2 News, Trailers and Much
More

Sam Peckinpah webmaster
Steve Mason attended the Fangoria Convention in Burbank last weekend and here is his report:
Fangoria's annual Weekend of Horrors (Southern Califonia installlment) wrapped on Sunday night at the Burbank Hilton, closing three full days of guest speakers and panels, film previews and premieres, all with the accompaniment of an enthusiastic group of horror film fans. This was my second Weekend (the previous being the 2002 Pasadena show), and it was a blast.
One of the highlights of the weekend was Saturday's "Screamwriters Panel" consisting of Stephen Susco ("The
Grudge 2"), Scott Kosar ("Texas
Chainsaw"), Mark Wheaton ("The Messengers"), Matt Venne ("White Noise 2"), Hans Rodionoff ("Man
THing"), and Adam Gieraschand Jace Anderson (upcoming "Suspiria" sequel, to be titled
"Mother of Tears" according to Anderson). Anderson promised that "Mother" would "push it farther", as far as the violence was concerned, and also went on to say that he is scripting a Clive Barker project, and is planning his first project as director, to be titled
"Autopsy". "Chainsaw" writer Kosar, made mention of a deleted scene from the final film that was nixed by the censors due to a "sexual undertone" that pervaded the scene in question. An interesting common thread among most of the writers (and commentary on the industry) was brought up when one of them pointed out that all but one of them (6 of 7) had been involved in a remake screenplay in recent months.
Advance screenings included an upcoming Crispin Glover film, "Simon Says",
wherein Glover plays a backwoods homicidal maniac with a truly perverse sense of
humor. Director William Dear ("Harry and the Hendersons) took feedback from the fans regarding the tone of the film (which could see some refinement and editing prior to release). As it is, the film works well as a VERY dark comedy with some solid gore scenes. The unrated cut of
"The Hills Have Eyes" received a very positive reaction. The cut screened contains a bit more gore, a slightly longer rape scene, and a couple of additional scenes not included in the theatrical release.
Zombie film news: The trailer for "Night of the Living Dead 3D" was screened to a generally enthusiastic reaction from the fans in attendance. The film will see it's world premiere at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood on September 3, and is still being shopped for a distribution deal. Later on in the weekend, producer (and former George Romero associate) John Russo laid out his plans for an upcoming zombie film to be entitled
"Escape of the Living Dead". Russo plans to direct the film which will be budgeted at $8 million.
Additional news and notes:
-An excerpt from Rusty Nails documentary "Dead On: The Life and Cinema of George A. Romero"
showed a brief glimpse of what promises to be a very good film.
(More to come on this as I'll be talking with Rusty on this and his other projects).
-Bob Clark talked about the upcoming
"Black Christmas" remake (due to open in December), as well as his remake of his 70's gore-comedy
"Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things"
(currently in pre-production), which he promises will add some new twists to traditional zombie lore.
-Troma's upcoming "Poultrygeist" was screened in part, and looks as if it'll be another
over-the-top melange of gore and humor that has become a trademark of the company.
Producer, and Troma CEO Lloyd Kaufman described the film as a "poke in the eye to the fast food industry." ...
Meanwhile, in non-Fangocon-related news, AOL Moviefone posted a third trailer for the

With the huge $12 million-plus opening day success of the
"Omen" remake -- a terrible movie by the way, only watch the original --
more remakes are well on the way. An old 1960s horror film, "I Know What You Did,"
is being prepped for the remake treatment, with Matt Venne ("White Noise 2")
penning the screenplay. Stephen King's "It" is being remade (it was originally a miniseries,
and will be again. Plus, writer Peter Filardi (who is penning
the "It" redo) is also working on a remake of the
underrated gem
"Wolfen." (Filardi may be best known for writing

Rob Zombie to Direct a Halloween Remake
June 4, 2006 --
A press release was unveiled today explaining that Rob Zombie,
indeed, will be making "Halloween" film, only it will be a remake of
the original to be released in October 2007. On his blog, he
announced of the original franchise, "That series is done, complete,
over. But what I am doing is starting totally from scratch. This is
the new HALLOWEEN. Call it a remake, an update, a reimagining or
whatever, but one thing that for sure is this is a whole new start
... a new beginning with no connection to the other series.
Variety, meanwhile, also reported on this huge piece of news. "This
is a bit of a prequel and a remake, combined," Zombie told the trade
publication. "Over 25 years and a lot of movies, a very scary
character became something of a Halloween cliche ... By the end of
the seqeul cycle, there was little connection to the original. I
take that film very seriously, and I want to make it terrifying
again."
Zombie said he spoke with series creator John Carpenter about the
project and "he was very supportive of what I wanted to do."

Brand New Omen Trailer ... Plus,
Save MGM's Midnite Movies Series
April 21, 2006 --
Yahoo! has posted the latest trailer for the "Omen" remake. Check it
out here.
...
This just in from the folks at DVD Drive-In:
Over a year ago, DVD Drive-In started an online petition for Sony to continue MGM's Midnite Movies series after the studio purchased MGM's film library. We also suggested dozens of possible Midnite Movie candidates, and the petition has gathered over 4,100+ signatures to date. We are sad to report that none of the titles on the list are on Sony's current DVD schedule, and it looks like the Midnite Movies are still in serious trouble.
Last fall, MGM had a number of great Midnite Movies double features on their schedule, including titles such as WITCHFINDER GENERAL (aka THE CONQUEROR WORM), BURN, WITCH BURN!, THE BLACK SLEEP and several others. But at the time, Sony took over MGM and removed all these would-be releases from the schedule. Just recently, DVD Drive-In contacted the original producer of WITCHFINDER GENERAL, who assured us that MGM spent much time, effort and money restoring the director's cut of the film for a future DVD release. He was also lead to believe that WITCHFINDER GENERAL would be on the October '06 DVD schedule, but recently confirmed, much to his (and our) disappointment, that the title is NOT on the current schedule. MGM had produced featurettes for BURN, WITCH BURN!, MASTER OF THE WORLD (both containing video interviews with screenwriter Richard Matheson) and THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT (a video interview with director Val Guest). Will these ever make it to DVD?! MGM had also done a number of new HD masters for Midnite Movies-type unreleased titles, but again, Sony has shown no interest in issuing them on DVD.
Sony has just announced two "pirate" related Midnite Movies double features to "piggyback" the upcoming sequel to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN. Although the releases are welcomed, they are anything but "Midnite Movies," and their classification as such was basically an afterthought. At this time, Sony has very little Midnite Movies-wise scheduled for this fall, so it seems that our continuing efforts have so far proven fruitless.
Sony must be informed that a niche for these kinds of films does indeed exist. I urge everyone who reads this who wants the Midnite Movies series to continue as it should, write to Chris Franchino, who manages MGM catalog marketing, at Chris_Franchino@spe.sony.com and David Bishop at David_Bishop@spe.sony.com, who heads the MGM DVD department at Sony. There's no doubt that when writing e-mails to them, you should be stern about how you feel about the series and what needs to be released, but we advise you keep it well-written, polite and professional.
Here is a list of Midnite Movie candidates which Sony has acquired from MGM. At this writing, NONE of them are on the upcoming release schedule:
THE AMAZING TRANSPARENT MAN
ANGEL, ANGEL, DOWN WE GO (aka CULT OF THE DAMNED)
ANGELS FROM HELL
THE BAT PEOPLE
BEAST OF HOLLOW MOUNTAIN
BEAST WITH A MILLION EYES
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (1962)

THE BLACK SLEEP
BLOOD AND LACE

CREATURE OF DESTRUCTION
THE CRIMSON CULT (aka CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR)
CRUCIBLE OF HORROR (aka THE CORPSE)
CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN
CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE

Horror fans in the American suburbs who have Comcast cable might be
excited to learn that Comcast is launching what promises to be the
first horror channel. Although horror channels have been in development for
quite some time, none have emerged, although there is an HD one called the

"Comcast Corp. and Sony Pictures Entertainment are scheduled to unveil a joint venture to launch a horror/thriller-themed cable brand at the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. convention on Monday.
"The long-anticipated venture is an outgrowth of the companies' collaboration in Sony's $4.8 billion acquisition of MGM in 2004. Comcast's last-minute investment in the acquisition allowed Sony to complete the deal. The cable operator was motivated to take a stake in part to tap Sony and MGM's film libraries to program multiple cable channels."
MGM has a nice horror catalog, so it looks like it may be a promising network. It will be an all

April 3, 2006 --
Pit of Horror is reporting that John McNaughton ("Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer") is in talks to direct the
"Nightmare on Elm Street" prequel for New Line. The movie, which will look at Freddy Kruger's roots, has long been in development. The news came from Englund himself: "I will tell you that John (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) McNaughton is tapped to direct. I think it should go the "CSI" route and be sort of like a docu-drama that shows his crimes against the children. Then you cast two of the greatest character actors you can find to play the lawyers that get him off. Then of course it leads up to Freddy being burned alive." …

Campbell on 'Evil Dead' Remake ... Englund to Appear in Burbank ... 'Equinox'
Official Release Date
March 21, 2006 --
Bruce Campbell spoke out about the
"Evil Dead" remake and here's what he had to say:
"We don't really talk about [another] sequel too much 'cause Sam is too busy right now. It would all be kinda moot. But I think we're gonna do a remake. It'll be a whole new story, though. It won't be with Ash. It'll be the evil book, and it'll affect a whole new group of people in a different situation. More like a reinvention. A lot of people, they got really crabby on the Internet when they first heard that type of stuff. But, we would never do anything to insult them. The trick is to take that premise - and we think it's a scary premise - and use some cool modern day FX… so we won't have green garden hoses in the shots. We wanna make a flat out, scary-ass, un-rated horror film.”

I had an idea for the sequel that I was really excited about, and I’m working on the script right now. Unlike the first HOSTEL, this one is not going to be a family movie. This one will have some blood in it and be a little darker and more violent. I have always wanted to see a sequel where it picks up with the next shot after the first one left off. I think the sequel should start off tonally where the last one left off. ..."
"Right now what I’ve got is HOSTEL 2 and then CELL. The great thing about collaborating with Stephen King is once you’re doing his movie that’s it. Stephen King is pretty cool about people adapting his work and not getting too precious over it. He really liked HOSTEL and approved of me. I’d love to put him in as a cameo if he’s available for it. There’s certainly room for it, but he’d have to get killed in some horrible way."

'Saw III' to Buzz This Coming Halloween
March 2, 2006 --
Here's the latest press release from Lion's Gate on "Saw III."
SANTA MONICA, CA, and VANCOUVER, BC, March 2, 2006 – Lionsgate (NYSE and TSX: LGF), the leading independent filmed entertainment studio, and Twisted Pictures today announced plans to develop and produce Saw III, the next film in the psychologically intense and disturbing horror franchise, for an October 27, 2006 wide release. The film will be directed by Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II), with story by Leigh Whannell and James Wan (Saw, Saw II) and screenplay by Whannell. The Twisted Pictures team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules will return as producers with Whannell and Wan set to executive produce. The announcement was made by Peter Block, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-productions, Jason Constantine, Lionsgate Senior VP of Acquisitions, and the Twisted Pictures team of Mark Burg and Oren Koules.
Saw II set a Lionsgate record with a three-day opening weekend of $31.7 million last Halloween, becoming the widest release in Lionsgate history and achieving one of the best opening weekends ever for a horror sequel. With a domestic box office of over $87 million and more than $148 million in worldwide theatrical box office, Saw II easily eclipsed the $55 million domestic box office total of the original Saw. Saw and Saw II have grossed nearly $250 million in combined worldwide box office.
Saw II debuted as the #1 DVD in North America two weeks ago, becoming the fastest-selling theatrical DVD release in Lionsgate history with 3.9 million units sold in its first week alone. The movie was also released on VHS and UMD. The Saw franchise has sold nearly 10 million units to date for Lionsgate.
“Yes, there will be more blood,” said Block and Constantine. “Saw III will involve the same creative forces responsible for the tremendous success of Saw II. The Twisted team of Mark and Oren, along with Darren, James and Leigh, have all agreed to be prominently involved in Saw III. We are proud to be partnered with some of the most disturbing creative talents on the planet, and the Saw franchise will ensure that gore becomes every bit as much a Halloween staple as ghosts, goblins and candy corn.” Block noted that the film will be dedicated to Twisted Pictures principal and Saw producer Gregg Hoffman, who passed away in November 2005.
“We have been discussing story lines that extend the Saw franchise to new limits and beyond with Lionsgate for the past several months,” said Burg and Koules. “The most important element of any franchise is remaining true to the roots of its success. We believe that we are developing a script that is certain to please the Saw franchise’s core fans while adding fresh, terrifying and unimaginable new twists to the Saw saga. Jigsaw himself would be proud.”
Saw III joins an upcoming Lionsgate slate that includes Trent Cooper’s Larry The Cable Guy: Health Inspector (March 24), the inspirational Akeelah And The Bee, starring Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett and Keke Palmer (April 28), the provocative Sundance sensation Hard Candy (April), Lionsgate’s first entry in the Spanish-language feature film marketplace, La Mujer de mi Hermano, starring telenovela sensation Barbara Mori (April) and the horror film See No Evil, starring WWE superstar Kane (May 19).
Lionsgate is the premier independent producer and distributor of motion pictures, television programming, home entertainment, family entertainment and video-on-demand content. Its prestigious and prolific library is a valuable source of recurring revenue and a foundation for the growth of the Company’s core businesses. The Lionsgate brand is synonymous with original, daring, quality entertainment in markets around the globe.
Twisted Pictures is helmed by Mark Burg and Oren Koules. Saw, one of the most profitable films of 2004, was their first picture under the new label and was also distributed by Lionsgate. Twisted is currently in postproduction on Catacombs, the first film under the previously-announced nine-picture deal between Twisted and Lionsgate, and is in production on Silence for Universal Pictures.

“We don’t know exactly what it’s going to be yet; it’s definitely not going to be set after 'Freddy vs. Jason' or 'Jason X'. This was such a juicy title, we couldn’t pass it up. So we’ve been talking to Wheaton, and we’re figuring it out. Jason didn’t really start killing until 'Friday the 13th Part 2,' so this isn’t a remake of the first one—Jason’s definitely going to be killing people in our movie. He didn’t wear the hockey mask until the third film [pictured], and our Jason is definitely going to wear the mask—so this is how we’re going about it right now.
“It feels to me like it’s going to be a re-imagining of… I don’t know if there is a term for it…it’s going to be like what we did with 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' that’s the best analogy I have. Unveils Details of 'Friday' Remake
February 14 2006 -- Today's
Holllywood Reporter unveiled details of Micahel Bay's "Friday the 13th,"
apparent remake. Here's what they wrote:
"Jason is coming back.
"Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes are gearing up to remake 'Friday the 13th' for New Line Cinema, from a script by Mark Wheaton.
"The 'Friday the 13th' series began in 1980, with Sean S. Cunningham directing the first feature, released by Paramount Pictures. After eight films the slasher series, featuring the masked killer Jason Voorhees, moved to New Line, which revived the franchise with 'Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday' in 1993.
"New Line's most recent installment, 'Freddy vs. Jason,' in which Voorhees faced off against Freddy Krueger from the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' series, was released in 2003, grossing more than $82 million domestically.
"Insiders said the producers were hoping to release the movie on Friday, October 13, but it is unlikely that all the pieces will fall into place to make that a reality. No director is attached to the project, and no actors have been cast.
"Platinum Dunes produced 2003's 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre' remake, which grossed more than $80 million. The company recently wrapped production on the prequel starring Jordana Brewster. The movie will be released October 6."

Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez
anthonology horror film "Grindhouse," which will

The only "banned" episode of the Showtime series "Masters of Horror" (the one episode Showtime has refused to air) is heading to DVD! Here is the official press release:
IDT Entertainment’s Anchor Bay Entertainment proudly announces the upcoming exclusive DVD release of Takashi Miike’s controversial film “Imprint” from the critically acclaimed MASTERS OF HORROR anthology series.
Premiering on the Showtime cable network in October 2005 to critical and public acclaim, each MASTERS OF HORROR film stands alone as an exercise in terror, written and directed with complete artistic freedom by the genre’s leading practitioners.
MASTERS OF HORROR is the ultimate director-driven project. “Imprint” is the only one from the thirteen episodes produced that will not air. “Like all the films in this groundbreaking series,” says executive producer John W. Hyde, ‘Imprint’ was made with no restrictions whatsoever on the filmmaker and we are honored to be able to bring Miike’s unadulterated vision to the fans.”
Miike observed: “To tell you the truth, I was not surprised to hear that ‘Imprint’ would not air. Through the experience of directing this episode, I have discovered that while humor can have its limits, fear has no limits. I could not suppress the volume of terror that this film conveys.”
Based on the terrifying novel “Bokkee Kyoutee” (Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co., LTD) by Shimako Iwai, Takashi Miike’s “Imprint,” produced by Kadokawa Pictures USA and filmed at Kadokawa Pictures in Tokyo, Japan, is set amid the corpse-strewn riverbanks of 19th century Japan in this tale of an American journalist (Billy Drago, “The Untouchables” and “Demon Hunter”), hoping to find a love he left behind. The journalist’s hunt leads to a dark island where the only refuge is a brothel. Spending the night with a unique woman (Youki Kudoh, “Memoirs of a Geisha”), he learns the danger of dredging up old ghosts.
Anchor Bay Entertainment will release “Imprint” on DVD in fall 2006. Anticipated bonus features include exclusive behind the scenes footage, trailers, stills and more. Kadokawa Herald Pictures in Tokyo, Japan is planning its world premiere and release soon thereafter.
