November 13, 2009 The man who brought '80s horror fans "Galaxy of Terror", "Humanoids From the Deep," and "Piranha", and who directed the Vincent Price classics "Pit and the Pendulum", "Masque of the Red Death" and "House of Usher" is going to get an honorary Oscar. It's about time.
It will take place at next year's awards ceremony. The 83-year-old filmmaker will be honored during ABC's live broadcast on March 7.
The legendary low-budget producer and director told The AP that he is "truly surprised" by the announcement.
"I felt the academy would not give an award to someone who made low-budget films," he said.
Corman is currently producing Splatter, a Netflix original webseries starring Corey Feldman and helmed by Joe Dante.
