Dan O'Bannon, RIP

December 18, 2009 Too many icons of the horror world have passed away. Here was one none of us could have seen coming so soon. Dan O'Bannon, writer of "Alien" and director of the '80s classic "Return of the Living Dead", has passed away at 63.

News of his passing has yet to hit the mainstream media, but it's enough credible places that it can be reported.

O'Bannon's only two directorial efforts were "Return" and a less-than-remembered film called "The Resurrected." But "Return" easily is one of the greatest zombie films ever made. These obituaries are a sign of how old we are all getting -- and how far back the '70s and '80s have become.

O'Bannon also did computer effects for "Star Wars," wrote "Dead and Buried" and "Lifeforce" and wrote the '95 horror film "Screamers."
