Massive News Briefs Dump - Remakes, Sequels, Stephen King, 'Suspiria', and More

March 30, 2011 Here are some assorted news items from the world of horror. We’ve got the latest on Neil Marshall, Stephen King, the "Suspiria" remake, "The Zombie Diaries " franchise, "World War Z", the "Hatchet" franchise and more.

Neil Marshall's next project is going to be an alien invasion film set during World War II. ... Tobe Hooper is currently filming "Djinn" in the Middle East. The film, about an evil spirit, stars Khalid Laith and Razane Jammal.... Aussie director Greg McLean, who helmed the brilliant "Wolf Creek" and the terrible "Rogue", will be filming "6 Miranda Drive", a supernatural thriller for Lionsgate. … John Gulager is directing a sequel to the "Piranha" 3D remake, which will also be 3D and set in a water park. … Jeff Broadstreet is filming a sequel to 2006’s "Night of the Living Dead 3D", presumably also in 3D.

Natalie Portman is out of the "Suspiria" remake, which she was attached to for a while, before winning her Oscar for the ballet-themed thriller "Black Swan". Director David Gordon Green says he's looking for a high-school age actress to take over the lead role and the film will be set in an all-girl’s boarding school, not a ballet. He also plans to adapt the original Goblin score. "We got the rights to the Goblin score, so we're going to use that. Steve Jablonsky, who did the score for Your Highness, is incredible. So I would love to see what he would do with the Goblin music. We could start in a very faithful, synthesizer kind of world of music that Goblin does in the original film, and by the end of it turn that score into a huge opera, which would be incredible." ...

Mila Brener and Bruce Dern are set to star in "Toolbox Murders 2," the sequel to the 2004 remake, which is being directed by Dean Jones. They're joining Chauntal Lewis, Lance Henriksen, Brian Krause and Ethan Phillips. ...

"The Zombie Diaries" has a sequel in the works, starring Philip Brodie, Alix Wilton Regan and newcomer Vicky Araico, and directed again by Michael Bartlett. It's called "World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries."

The "Child's Play" remake isn't happeneing. Neither is "Jeepers Creepers 3." Both of those long in gestation projects were under the wing of MGM, which is still recovering from its bankruptcy....

Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Stephen King is in talks to pen an episode of RFrank Darabont's "The Walking Dead" for the second season, with his son, Joe Hill. One of the best Stephen King movies ever was Frank Darabont's "The Mist," so it will be interesting to see the two men's creative minds at work together again. …

Meanwhile, "World War Z", an R-rated action zombie film that would have been directed by Marc Forester and starred Brad Pitt, is likely going to be scuttled due to the stigma R-rated horror is suffering from at the moment. The film would have been based on the novel by Max Brooks. Apparently, Paramount doesn’t have the balls to finance it. ...

Dark Sky Films has greenlit a third "Hatchet" film from Adam Green. The director once promised ESplatter that a third movie in the franchise would be in 3D. …Gregory Wilson, director of the creepy "The Girl Next Door", is set to direct Ghoul, based on the horror novel of the same name by Brian Keene. … Darren Lynn Bousman’s "Mother’s Day" remake obviously won’t be hitting theaters on its planned date of April 1 and apparently is without a release date.
