May 17, 2008 Horror movies are making their mark on the Cannes fest, taking place now through May 25. Screen Daily reports that Filmfax is shopping a proposed "Rec 2" around the Cannes Film Festival. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza would again make the movie. A U.S. remake of "Rec," "Quarantine" is already being made. Meanwhile, the Weinsteins scooped up rights to another horror film at Cannes.
According to indieWIRE, North American rights to James Watkins' "Eden Lake" were acquired by the Weinsteins at Cannes. Director Watkins told Fangoria that the film is a bout a couple "on a romantic weekend getaway being terrorized by dysfunctional teenagers with no ethical boundaries." Watkins is also writing "The Descent 2."
Also announced (or at least rumored) at Cannes: David Lynch will be making a horror movie with Werner Herzog entitled "My Son, My Son": the story of a San Diego man who becomes obsessed with Sophocles and kills his mother. Shooting is set to start in March 2009. This comes from the Sun of Great Britain, one of the most reliable publications in all of journalism.
