Habitat (1997)
Directed by Rene Daalder

Starring Alice Krige Balthazar Getty Kenneth Welsh Tchéky Karyo

From the director of the cult classic "Massacre at Central High" comes this heap of crap about a family of eco-freaks living in an environmentally destroyed America of the future. Like many direct-to-video genre films, "Habitat" is way too talky. The fact that the Earth has been devastating by the total erosion of the ozone layer needs to be explained to us by characters, again and again. So much of the plot is expressed verbally, in fact, that you need to pay strict attention to what's going being said. By the time one figures out what the film is about, however, it's too late: You realize you've been spending your precious time watching a certified, Grade-Z turkey.

Alice Krige (of "Ghost Story" and "Star Trek: First Contact" fame) plays the hippie mother of Balthazar Getty. The teenage son's family has just moved into a new town where bullies abound, and other kids' parents come across as right-wing assholes – never mind the fact that their policies helped destroy the ozone later. After being tied up outside the school under the burning hot sun and not being scorched to death as a result, Getty's teenage character realizes that he was genetically engineered by his parents to sustain extreme heat. Meanwhile, his father (Tchéky Karyo) has become an alien life form that radiates throughout the house in the form of spores. The house, in fact, has become a giant green room.

Krige is always a pleasure to watch, and she looks just as charismatically spaced-out in this as she did in "Ghost Story." But aside from here, there's nothing here worth recommending, except for maybe a nude scene or two. This came out on video in the mid-1990s, was filmed in Canada and features some nudity and some iffy gore effects. It's not really a horror film, but it's marketed as such, so you'll likely run into it in that section at your local Blockbuster. My suggestion: Avoid it. It's out of print for a reason.
