Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992)
Directed by Anthony Hickox

Starring Brent Bolthouse Doug Bradley Kevin Bernhardt Peter Boynton

Hands-down the best in the entire Hellraiser series, even though it's directed by Anthony Hickox, the man who brought us the lame-ass "Waxwork" and "Waxwork II," in addition to the truly god-awful "Warlock: The Armageddon." Hickox hit a home run with this picture.

I know that's a controversial position for a man to take -- saying that Part 3 and not 1 of this saga -- is the best. But I like the pace, the effects, the overall feel of this movie better than parts 1 and 2. Maybe it was the mood I was in when I saw it, or the fact that there was precious little else being produced by horror filmmakers at the time. After all, it was the early 1990s.

But it still stands out as a favorite. Pinhead (Doug Bradley), the trademarked lead cenobite (i.e., demon) who appears in all these movies, is stuck in a statue purchased by a young nightclub owner (Bernhardt) and gets him to lure female victims to his apartment, conveniently located inside the club. A female TV news reporter (Terry Farrell) gets snoopy and finds herself pitted against a small army of cenobites. After befriending a chain-smoking teen with a crush on the sleazy disco owner, she learns the origins of Pinhead and the spirit of his former "good" self guides her through dreams on how to confront his evil alter-ego. A similar theme was used in Part 2. Especially intriguing is the relationship Pinhead develops with the nightclub owner and -- later his heartbroken girl.

This was the very last great "Hellraiser" film. From here on out, the series was gutted by low budgets. Dimension Films took over rights to the franchise. The fourth film, produced by them, was "Hellraiser: Bloodline," a pretty bad film. It was followed by an abysmal direct-to-video turkey entitled "Hellraiser:Inferno." It now remains moribund on the direct-to-video market, with new low-budget sequels planned. Truth is, a "Hellraiser" movie needs a good budget, and with "Hellraiser III: Inferno," filmmakers had enough money to make a horror film that delivered the goods. At the time this was released, there was even a series of slick adult comic books based on Barker's premise of a doorway to hell accessible by a puzzle box. These were good times for the "Hellraiser" franchise.

For maximum shock value, get only the unrated version of this movie.

Well, first of all, thanks for having the courage to even BE of the opinion that this was the bet film of the series, even though most people think it's a pile o' shit. Respect. I too do not think that this movie is bad, especially not as bad as Inferno, but I can also certainly agree with the main objections against this movie: ridiculous Cenobites (CD? Camera? What the F?), horror clichés (the bad guy "disco owner", uuuh) and too much focus on Pinhead; but it's a well watchable movie. I can, however, not agree with you on your rejection of Hellraiser 4. I deem this one the best of the series right after 1 and 2. The inculsion of past, present and future is interesting and Twin Cenobite is a kick-ass demon.

In Hellraiser (1987), Kirsty Cotton unintentionally summons Pinhead and the cenobites, but is spared on condition that she leads the cenobites to her uncle, Frank Cotton, who had escaped them. In Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988), it is revealed that the cenobites are followers of the god "Leviathan", and were originally humans who had lost all memory of their prior human lives. Kirsty shows Pinhead a photograph of his former self, causing him to remember. He briefly battles the newly created Channard cenobite, who reverts him back to his human form before killing him.[5] In Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth (1992), Pinhead's human and cenobite sides have been separated: the former is condemned to walk eternity in limbo, while the latter is completely unbound from Hell's laws, killing indiscriminately and creating a small cenobite army from his victims. Pinhead is foiled in his attempt to destroy the Lament Configuration by his human other, who re-merges with him and returns to Hell.[6]

In Hellraiser: Bloodline (1996) Pinhead allies himself with the demon princess Angelique, in order to force John Merchant (a descendant of the inventor who built the Lament Configuration) to create an unsealable gateway to Hell. The future segments of the film reveal that Pinhead is finally destroyed in the year 2127 by Dr. Paul Merchant, another descendant, who creates the "Elysium Configuration", a space station capable of closing Hell's gateway for good. Pinhead is trapped inside it and is destroyed along with the box.[7] Pinhead makes minor appearances in the direct-to-video installments, Hellraiser: Inferno (2000), Hellraiser: Hellseeker (2002), Hellraiser: Deader (2005), Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005).

The Mean Girls star took over Teddy’s at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, where Nicole Richie’s former fiance DJ-AM played host. Insiders claim Lohan wore a slip dress for a family dinner before the party and then changed into a Bradley Bayou frock. At the stroke of midnight, the actress was presented with a birthday cake featuring the face of her heroine Marilyn Monroe. Then, Lohan’s best friend - and reported girlfriend - Samantha Ronson took over the DJ booth from DJ-AM and played records until the party finished at just after 1am. According to Eonline.com, guests included Joel and Benji Madden, David Spade and Rod Stewart’s son Sean. Happy birthday to Lindsay Lohan
