A fairly entertaining special effects romp with Bacon as an asshole scientist experimenting with invisibility. Shue is his ex-girlfriend/assistant.
Of course, Bacon goes ahead and experiments on himself, becoming invisible. He uses his new invisible powers to rape a beautiful neighbor heís been peeping on. He also starts groping some of his female co-workers. In the end, he becomes a megalomaniac, and becomes enraged when he learns that ex-girlfriend Shue is sleeping with another guy in the office.
Itís a pretty forgettable rip-off of the much superior "The Fly" from David Cronenberg, with plenty of plot elements borrowed that film: Thereís a love triangle; an experiment goes terribly wrong; a scientist becomes more and more narcissistic and psychotic as the result of gaining strange powers. It finally devolves into a weak imitation of "Alien" with the other scientists trapped in an underground complex being stalked by the maniac invisible man.
The effects are awesome. As we see Bacon disappear, first his skin goes, then his muscles, etc. Itís pretty amazing to watch. But ultimately the movie is so similar to Cronenbergís "The Fly"óand so inferioróitís a little annoying to watch. However, if you havenít seen that Cronenberg classic, you might be duped into thinking itís an original work of art.
Anyway, itís entertaining enough to catch, particularly when it shows up on cable. An "unrated" edition may make its way to DVD as well.
