Interesting horror film casts Sam Neill as an investigator looking for the world's most popular horror author Sutter Cane (Prochnow). It seems everyone that reads a certain book by the missing author goes totally bananas and becomes a homicidal maniac.
In his search for the missing Cane, Neill winds up in a town that appears to be straight out of one of the horror author's books. Like Stephen King, Cane used the same town as a setting in many of his books and in this mysterious town Neill has discovered, all of the horrible monsters and characters from Cane's novels really exist. Fantasy slowly starts merging more and more with reality and Neill himself finally goes insane.
Of course, it turns out that Cane is bringing about the end of the world and all this winds up relating to the Book of Revelations.
It's pretty cool. Great atmosphere, Charlton Heston (!) in a small role as Cane's publisher and great performances from Neill and Prochnow make this one of Carpenter's only decent films from the 1990s.
