Boy Eats Girl (2005)
Directed by Stephen Bradley

Starring David Leon Laurence Kinlan Samantha Mumba Sarah James Tadhg Murphy

Joining "Shaun of the Dead" and "Fido" as a 2000s zombie-comedy, "Boy Eats Girl" is about as light and fluffy as a horror movie can get, despite it's strong gore quotient and frequent sexual references. It has more in common with "Ginger Snaps" than "Shaun," but it's not as good as either of those films (a bit of an unfair comparison as those films are already classics).

Set in an Irish high school, the movie really could have been filmed anywhere. David Leon plays a high school kid with a crush on a nice-girl hottie (recording star Samantha Mumba). When he is led to believe falsely that she is having an affair with the town asshole, he accidentally hangs himself, only to be discovered by his mother.

It just so happens, however, that the other day his mother discovered a secret passageway at the historic town church where she works, and stumbled upon an ancient text by which one can resurrect the dead. The only problem is that the resurrected dead then carry a zombie virus. She re-animates her son, who slowly begins going through zombie transformations (ala Ginger in "Ginger Snaps") including (embarrassingly enough) not being able to get an erection when the town slut tries to seduce him. He begins infecting townsfolk, creating a small zombie army.

He is eventually able to patch things up with the true love of his life () and joins her and some survivors for a stand-off with the living cannibal dead army he created. The best scene in the movie has his girlfriend commandeering a tractor which she uses to annihilate some of the ghouls. A pretty gory sequence.

Going for "Shaun"-style laughs and gore, "Boy Eats Girl" does feature some decent comedy performances from the young Irish cast. But like a lot of uber-low budget living dead films, it ultimately suffers from a lack of zombies. There aren't nearly enough of them. It's not the work of genius that "Shaun" was, but it is pretty funny. It finally made its way to DVD in the U.S. in 2007 after debuting in Ireland in '05.
