CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1979)
Starring Robert Kerman and Perry Pirkanen This bizarre film out of Italy has its following. More violent porn than horror, it does own the dubious distinction of being the best in what`s known as the "cannibal" genre, often involving sick gore and, in the case of this film, real animal killings. While PETA members will probably want to stay far away, fear film lovers will definitely want to catch it, since there is no doubt that it influenced the makers of "The Blair Witch Project". In this film, as in that one, a crew of filmmakers arrogantly head out into the wilderness (in this case a South American jungle), hoping to film something that they should fear. In this case, the moviemakers are a group of arrogant New Yorkers who plan to make a graphic documentary about cannibals. A smart move. They naturally find themselves the victims of the same natives they planned to exploit. The film does boast slick production values (for an Italian cannibal film, that is). The shaky cameras and screams of the filmmakers are so similar to what happened in "Blair Witch" it's amazing someone didn't get sued. It isn`t all presented as a documentary. The first half of the film involves an American expert sent into the jungle looking for the lost filmmakers, only to discover their badly decomposed corpses and cans of film. An interesting, odd movie--one that`s way too disgusting for most video chains. But I can`t say I`d recommend it. Any film that graphically depicts the actual slaughter of a turtle isn`t a class act. |
