CREEPSHOW (1982)

Directed by George Romero

Starring Adrienne Barbeau and Hal Holbrook

Really fantastic anthology of stories, penned by Stephen King and directed by Romero. The two men made this movie with the idea of making enough money to eventually produce "The Stand" together. That project eventually became a TV miniseries without any involvement from Romero. But "Creepshow" wound up being one of the best horror films of the 1980s and arguably the best Stephen King movie ever made. Not based on any of his books, he wrote the screenplay specifically for Romero.

The film revolves around the fictional comic book, "Creepshow," a concept that would later be borrowed by the HBO series "Tales From the Crypt." In the best story, Holbrook plays an abused husband who feeds his wife (Barbeau) to a monster discovered in a box in the basement where he works. In another excellent tale, E.G. Marshall plays an anal-retentive tycoon terrified of germs, who does battle with an army of roaches.

The film is gory, the great music by Joel Harrison is reminiscent of "Halloween" and the shocks kick ass. In short, this is a must-see and is still very accessible, even to pimple-faced teenagers that haven't seen much beyond "Scream."

Followed by a lame-ass sequel, "Creepshow 2."
