STEPFORD WIVES (1975)

Directed by Bryan Forbes

Starring Katharine Ross and Paula Prentiss

Incredible 1970s horror pic from the writer of "Rosemary's Baby."  Ross plays a frustrated housewife who moves from the big city to the suburban enclave of Stepford with her husband, the newly recruited member of a secret society of sexist men. She begins to notice that a select number of women in the community, those who have been around for long enough, are acting like "perfect" wives, worshipping their husbands and obsessing about cooking and cleaning.

Naturally something sinister is going on. What it is has been pretty well publicized. In fact, the term "Stepford Wife" has become a part of the popular vocabulary. But for those who don't know the ending, I won't let it slip.

Needless to say, this film expresses the ultimate feminist nightmare about what men are like, and it's a genuinely chilling vision. And damn if it isn't true! Come here, wife! Bring me my dinner! Yeehaw!

"The Stepford Wives" was impossible to find on video for decades, and could only be caught occasionally on late-night TV. Anchor Bay, however, released a widescreen version of the film in 1997. Good for them. This flick kicks ass.

Don't let your wife watch it. She might catch on to what us men folk here is up to.
